What Size Wire for a 30 Amp RV Outlet?
Wire and breaker sizing for a 30 Amp RV Outlet — the typical 120V circuit, plus the code details (NEC 310.16) that change the answer.
Calculations are built on the 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC) and cross-checked against the published code tables. How we verify. Last reviewed June 2026.
On a 30A 120V circuit (TT-30) at 75°C terminations.
Protected by a 30A breaker (NEC 240.6).
GFCI required. The 2023 NEC (210.8(D) for specific appliances, 210.8(A) for kitchen/outdoor receptacles) requires GFCI protection here. Verify the code edition your jurisdiction has adopted.
30 Amp RV Outlet Circuit Details
- A TT-30 RV outlet is 30A at 120V (not 240V) — a single hot, neutral and ground.
- 10 AWG copper on a 30A breaker is standard.
- GFCI is required for a 30A RV outlet at a dwelling (NEC 210.8(A) outdoor) — but NEC 551.71 does NOT require GFCI on 30A/50A pedestals at RV parks.
- Do not confuse it with a 30A 240V dryer outlet — the RV plug is 120V only.
